    Description

    Three Year
SLQ ”TEARDROP” High Grade Error Set 20-S, 26-S, 28-S
One Bid Takes All THREE! ALL XF+/-
I first read about this (teardrop)error, pictured
on a 1926-S Standing Liberty Quarter, and saw a picture in the early 1960’s in the First Edition of Spadone’s
error and variety paperback book. It was called, ”Extra Fold In Cloak”. I did see the 20-S mentioned in the 5
    th
Edition of Spadone( I don’t recall if it was mentioned in the First Ed.).
I had no idea when the name ”Teardrop” came into use. Recently, I did see a reference about it in a more recent book by Knauss, referencing a book by Cline, who attributed the term to the collector that submitted it to him for inclusion in his study.
According to the references, of the three, the 20-S is the least common. These are all late die state examples of the die-clash caused die break ( a chunk was broken out of the obverse die, when struck multiple times by the reverse die, with no coin blank in between.. The early die state “teardrops” are smaller, the die breaks increased in size due to additional
clashes. There are examples showing clash marks on the reverse(the 20-S in this lot shows one clearly above the right wing). Apparently, the reverse dies on the other two in
this lot had been changed after the obverse die clash damage had occurred . Interestingly enough, the dates of similar ”teardrop” ,coins can be determined in grades so low that the dates are not readable-as the shapes of the die breaks are quite unique, and are in the deepest recess of the design, protected from wear.
This is a GREAT set in all aspects. These are VERY nice coins.
The three high grade examples are pictured here, and the successful
    bidder will receive them.
